Telecom operators to jointly build 3G network

Chinanews, Nov. 24 - According to Beijing media, an insider revealed that
should things go smoothly, system operators participating in the Ministry
of Information Industry's (MII) third-phase TD-SCDMA field test will
complete all lab tests and field tests this December. By then China's six
major operators, namely China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile, China
Unicom, China Railway Communication and China Satcom, will join hands in
TD-SCDMA base station construction in Beijing and Shanghai to test every
functional feature and performance index of independent TD-SCDMA networks.
As the TD-SCDMA standards have no experience in commercial operation, the
joint network test carried out by the six major operators at the end of
2005 will doubtlessly serve as a significant turning point during the
integral TD-SCDMA commercialization process. This insider mentioned that
only through the above tests could the system's flaws be discovered and
amended. Closely watched key issues regarding TD-SCDMA construction mode,
operation mode and business mode will be solved through further tests and
trial operations. Industry experts deem that China Telecom and China
Railcom are the most likely to obtain a license for TD-SCDMA operation.
He revealed that the ongoing second-phase TD-SCDMA field test has drawn
attention of more and more domestic and international telecom
enterprises, many of whom have participated in the test already.
