People welcomed the new year with operas

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-03 15:24:10

As rural citizens in Henan's Qinyang City are big fans of local operas
such as Huaiqing Bangzi, Yu opera, Qu opera, they follow the custom of
staging operas during month of Chinese New Year in lunar calendar since
ancient times. During that month, scenes of operas can be seen everywhere
in urban and rural Qinyang. The performers on the stage are acting
seriously while the audience are watching intently and fascinatedly,
becoming an attractive scenic backdrop in the month of Chinese New Year.
During the eight days from the third to tenth days in Chinese New Year,
villagers from Ziling Village will have a chance to enjoy 16 dramas
performed by drama troupes from Xinxiang and Luoyang.

Tour the Great Wall with 3D technology

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-09 17:23:30

Chinanews, Jan. 9 C The China Academy of Social Sciences will join hands
with the Great Wall Association to replicate the image of the Great Wall
with three dimension technologies and put the image on internet, deputy
General Secretary of the Great Wall Association Zhang Ji said on Sunday.
"The image of the Great Wall will be finely made and netizens will have a
clear view of the wall from its starting point, Shanhaiguan Pass, to its
termination, Jiayuguan Pass, where the Great Wall was originally made in
the Qin dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming dynasty", said Zhang.
He added that at present, they were preparing to take a navigational
picture of the wall, which will involve an investment of 200 million yuan.
After the website is finished, people will see the earth rotating when
clicking the website. If one clicks on the location of the Great Wall,
the earth will move closer and one gradually see a white line running
through the northern part of China. That is the Great Wall.
As a visitor on website, one can tour the Great Wall with a perspective
as closely as a normal tourist. Spending one day or two, one can walk
through the Great Wall and get some information about the mineral
resources and economic development status nearby.
Zhang said in order to achieve this visual effect, they would need to use
advanced technologies such as navigational sensors, national geographic
information system and the GPS system. This equipment would allow them to
collect detailed information about the Great Wall. After analyzing and
processing, the data would be used to create a 3D image of the Wall,
which would later be posted on internet.
For some parts which were already destroyed and could not be displayed on
the picture, researchers will study the soil element of the location to
identify its archeological age.

BOC confirmed to sell a 5% stake to Temasek

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-30 13:50:10

Chinanews, Dec. 30 - According to China Securities Journal, the Bank of
China (BOC) will submit its listing application to Hong Kong Stock
Exchange in early 2006. Sources from the bank revealed on Wednesday that
relevant documents for the application are ready. This 400-odd-page book
of application clearly includes Singapore's Temasek Holdings as one of
its strategic investors, saying it will acquire a 5% stake of the bank at
the public offering price. The mystery of Temasek's purchase of BOC stake
is finally unveiled after months of suspense.
This Singaporean company announced successively in August and September
this year to buy a 5.1% stake of the China Construction Bank (CCB) for
US$1.466 billion and a 10% BOC stake for US$3.1 billion. It also promised
to buy US$1 billion worth of new stakes of CCB at the public offering
price.
The US$5.5 billion is far from enough to satisfy Temasek's appetite for
China's banking sector. Insiders participating in CCB's strategic
investment invitation said that Temasek had planned to buy as high as a
20% stake of the bank and to increase the proportion to 40% at a later
time. Such ambition is far beyond the bottom line Chinese banks offer to
strategic investors.
The final result of Temasek's BOC stake acquisition indicates that
Chinese banks are mildly adjusting their policies of strategic investment
invitation, which will inevitably affect the Industrial and Commercial
Bank of China (ICBC) in its investment invitation.

Insufficient risk management results in huge deferred payment

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-20 16:40:28

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 20 C Turnover of the import and export in China
is expected to reach 1,400 billion US dollars this year, a step forward
than last years 1,100 billion US dollars.
While import and export in China makes progress year by year, at least an
amount of 100 billion US dollars of payment overseas are delayed and the
number is increasing by15 billion US dollars every year.
The high level of deferred payment overseas is attributable to the lack
of risk management system in our domestic enterprises, said Han
Jiaping, director of the credit management department from the research
institute of the Ministry of Commerce.
While many domestic enterprises complained that their overseas customers
delayed a 30-day payment to 90 days, 120 days or even longer, related
survey showed that this payment delay resulted from a lack of a
well-established credit management system in domestic enterprises.
Most often, domestic enterprises do not pay much attention to risk
management and therefore do not have effective means and capability to
control risk. As a result, domestic enterprises have a long-term delayed
payment and a high ratio of bad debt.
Related statistics showed that of all enterprises involving in import and
export, only 11% of them have set up a crediting management system and
93% of these are foreign-funded enterprises.
Han pointed out that many domestic enterprises do not set up a policy to
trace payment, or if they do have such a policy, it is not being executed
fully. For some enterprises, they do allocate people to monitor payment.
However, these people often lack experience. And for others, they just
concern that tracing debt might spoil their relation with the customer.
In the long run, many overseas enterprises might habitually delay their
payment.
In order to solve this problem, Han suggested Chinese companies set up an
internal risk control system. At the same time, establishing a credit
system in society is equally important. However, credit service industry
in China is still at its beginning point and many companies do not know
where to seek help if they encounter a problem overseas.
At present, almost all U.S. companies involving in credit service have
opened their business in China and some companies in Europe and Japan are
showing their interest to the Chinese market. International giants
coming to China will speed up competition in credit service market in
China, and it will boost Chinas credit service industry as well, said
Han.

Chinese explorers to reach South Pole on foot

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-29 13:40:47

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 28 (By Wang Huan) - A 7-member non-official
Chinese expedition team will participate in the South Pole expedition
program this December as part of China's "7+2" program. The team is
composed of Captain Wang Yongfeng from China Mountaineering Association,
Ms. Wang Qiuyang who is the first Chinese woman to have reached the North
Pole on foot, Mr. Li Weiwen and his wife Liang Qun from Shenzhen
University, and three other members. They will walk to the South Pole and
realize the dream of reaching the South Pole on foot.
According to Wang, the expedition team will set off from Beijing on Dec.
1 for physical training and preparatory work in Chile and arrive at the
Patriot Hills Camp 80 degrees south in latitude on the 15th. They will
start their South Pole expedition on Dec. 17 and walk 120 kilometers on
the Antarctic ice sheet to reach the South Pole on Nov. 27. After a short
break, the expedition team will march for the Mt. Winson, the highest
peak in Antarctic, from Jan. 3 to 6 next year and reach the top of the
Mountain 4897 meters in altitude.
The "7+2" program means an extreme expedition to reach the top of Seven
Summits plus the North and South Pole on foot. It marks the highest level
of extreme expedition of human. At present, no more than 10 people around
the world have completed the program. By August 2004, four Chinese have
reached the top of the Seven Summits, but none have completed the "7+2"
program.
This South Pole expedition on foot will be the last step of China's "7+2"
program attempt. Successful completion of this expedition will set
several records: Wang Yongfeng, Ci Luo and Liu Jian will be the first
three Chinese "warriors" to complete the "7+2" program at the same time;
Wang Qiuyang and Liang Qun will be the first Chinese women to arrive at
the South Pole and Mt. Winson on foot, and Li Weiwen and Liang Qun will
be the first Chinese couple to challenge the South Pole.

Telecom operators to jointly build 3G network

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-25 14:13:32

Chinanews, Nov. 24 - According to Beijing media, an insider revealed that
should things go smoothly, system operators participating in the Ministry
of Information Industry's (MII) third-phase TD-SCDMA field test will
complete all lab tests and field tests this December. By then China's six
major operators, namely China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile, China
Unicom, China Railway Communication and China Satcom, will join hands in
TD-SCDMA base station construction in Beijing and Shanghai to test every
functional feature and performance index of independent TD-SCDMA networks.
As the TD-SCDMA standards have no experience in commercial operation, the
joint network test carried out by the six major operators at the end of
2005 will doubtlessly serve as a significant turning point during the
integral TD-SCDMA commercialization process. This insider mentioned that
only through the above tests could the system's flaws be discovered and
amended. Closely watched key issues regarding TD-SCDMA construction mode,
operation mode and business mode will be solved through further tests and
trial operations. Industry experts deem that China Telecom and China
Railcom are the most likely to obtain a license for TD-SCDMA operation.
He revealed that the ongoing second-phase TD-SCDMA field test has drawn
attention of more and more domestic and international telecom
enterprises, many of whom have participated in the test already.

Lesbian writer espouses true love is guiltless

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-24 14:35:53

Chinanews, Nov. 23 - China's first autobiographical "Lala" novel by
lesbian writer -- "My angel my love" has been published by China Theatre
Publishing House. This is China's first novel reflecting lesbians at
work, at love and their lifestyle and psychology.
The singular name of Lala is not yet widely known. It is a self-appointed
name for a group of lonely people existing in society. The rest of the
world called them lesbians. Last year, China officially published
estimates of 5 to 10 million homosexuals for all of China. Some experts
guess that this group of underground people may number as many as 50
million.
The life and emotional state of this group of people are full of mystery
to ordinary folks. Many of the latter find it hard to comprehend the
former's action. One Lala woman with a pen name of "Ocean Blue" put her
love story into a moving novel called "My angel my love" and let people
see the pure world of love and emotions of Lala. The book uses female
gentility and details to paint a picture of love between the same gender.
It was learned that the novel first appeared on the internet in the
second half of this year and attracted quite a lot of attention. It made
its appearance on 12 websites and more than 130 internet media sites and
drew the attention of more than 10 million netizens, spreading at a rate
that was surprisingly fast. China has rarely seen works about lesbian
activity, perhaps because Chinese cultural atmosphere strongly censures
homosexual love or because traditional Chinese culture has unsurpassable
generation gap for intimacy between women.
"My angel my love" is China's fist autobiographical love story by a
lesbian. Its author "Ocean Blue" has become China's first lesbian writer
who dares to shout "True love is guiltless".
