Is this an OK Chinese name?

Strawberries513 -
I am going to China for a study program, and on the visa application form it asks for a Chinese name (if any), and real name. The Chinese name that I use for myself (but have never used for anything serious) is 乐恋飞 (乐 yue4 being the surname and 恋飞 lian4 fei1 being the given name). I dont know if I should put this name in the application, and if it is ok to use it, is it even a good/acceptable Chinese name? (for a girl?)

If anything is wrong with it and someone would like to suggest something else, I am open to ideas. But I also need to know whether I am supposed to actually put this name in my application since its not a legal name.

Thanks !!

Luobot -
Congratulations! On the Visa form, I would keep it simple and just leave it out. Once in China, you can tell people to call you any Chinese name that you like. No need to put it on any government document, which then won’t match up to any other official US document, like your passport. On the name itself, I have no idea, but it sounds pretty. I’ll cast my vote in favor. Good luck, and write home (I mean here) often!
HashiriKata -
Strawberries513, have you ever considered 草莓 as your Chinese name? It sounds nice, too.
Ian_Lee -
In Putonghua, I think that when 乐 is used as the surname, it should be pronounced as luo4 instead of yue4.

I can confirm that in Putonghua, 乐 can be used as 2 separate surnames Yuè and .

Ian Lee, 乐 as a surname has two pronunciations in standard Mandarin. See this thread, where people seem to say that northerners habitually read it as Yue, while southerners read it as Le (or Lao) - all fourth tone.
Lu -
Am not at all a native speaker, but your name sounds really beautiful to me. Original yet credible as a Chinese name, and it doesn't seem to mean anything strange.
Good luck in China!

Personally, I like this name 乐恋飞 Yue4 Lian4fei1. A pretty nice Chinese name!
ArmedStreaker -
that's a nice name! even i can't think of such a great name.
but i guess "乐 le4" sounds better

EU halts Chinese sweater imports

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-23 18:59:44

(Source: Xinhua)

July 23 - The European Commission (EC) announced on Friday that it has
blocked imports of sweaters made in China, after limits on imports were
breached a month after both sides agreed on a quota system.
China was permitted to export 69 million sweaters to the European Union
(EU) from June 11 to the end of the year, but the EU 's executive said it
had stopped issuing import licenses after July 12 because Chines exports
had hit the limits.
"The situation is that we assume the limit as agreed with China in this
category has been hit," said EC spokeswoman for trade Claude
Veron-Reville.
"For the time being, we are discussing the issue with Chinese authorities
and (EU) member states," she added.
China's full quota of sweater imports for the 2005 was 181.5 million
units, although that is due to rise to 200 million next year.
China has promised to limit its rapidly growing textile trade with the
West, following complaints from officials in Europe and the US that
Chinese exports were damaging their own industries.
The limits were agreed voluntarily following China's accession to the
World Trade Organization (WTO) and the abolition of the WTO' s
multi-fibre arrangement, which freed up trade in clothing and textiles
between rich and poor countries.
China's growing exports have caused increasing concern in the United
States and Europe, and leaders in both regions welcomed China's
announcement on Thursday that it was revaluing its currency and allowing
a limited float.
In the long run, the currency changes may make Chinese goods more
expensive in Western markets, and prove more effective than quotas in
limiting the impact of Chinese textile exports.

Wang Qingyi, a collector from Shandong's Zouping County, shows 7 volumes
of official version of Kang Xi Dictionary (a keynote Chinese dictionary
compiled in 1710) that he collected on July 18, 2005. The dictionary,
designed in Song (960-1279) printing style, consists of 40 volumes. The
16cm times 28.5 cm dictionary was chiefly in the possession of the
emperor, using it as an award for high officials who have made
significant contributions to the country. Such dictionaries are rarely
seen in the folk. According to authoritative collectors, there are at
most ten sets of official edition of Kangxi Dictionaries in the world.

Beijing clinic treats online addicts

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-04 10:07:14

(Source: Agencies)

Three thousand primary school and middle school students took part in the
activity aiming for healthy internet culture on June 21, 2005 in
Xinjiang. (File Photo)

BEIJING, July 4 - The 12 teenagers and young adults, some in ripped jeans
and baggy T-shirts, sit in a circle, chewing gum and fidgeting as they
shyly introduce themselves. "I'm 12 years old," one boy announces with a
smile. "I love playing computer games. That's it." "It's been good to
sleep" says another, a 17-year-old with spiky hair, now that he's no
longer on the computer all day.
The youths are patients at China's first officially licensed clinic for
Internet addiction, a downside of the online frenzy that has accompanied
the nation's breathtaking economic boom.
"All the children here have left school because they are playing games or
in chat rooms everyday," says the clinic's director, Dr. Tao Ran. "They
are suffering from depression, nervousness, fear and unwillingness to
interact with others, panic and agitation. They also have sleep
disorders, the shakes and numbness in their hands."
According to government figures, China has the world's second-largest
online population94 millionafter the United States.
While China promotes Internet use for business and education, government
officials also say Internet cafes are eroding public morality. Many
illegally operated Internet cafes were shut down and fined huge fees for
their operators.
Tao's government-owned clinic, which began taking patients in March,
occupies the top floor of a two-story building on a quiet, tree-lined
street on the campus of the Beijing Military Region Central Hospital in
the heart of the Chinese capital.
A dozen nurses and 11 doctors care for the patients, mostly youths aged
14 to 24 who have lost sleep, weight and friends after countless hours in
front of the computer, often playing video games with others online.
Some come voluntarily, while others are checked in by their parents. Many
say their online obsessions helped them escape day-to-day stress,
especially pressure from parents to excel in school.
Some can't stop playing games, while the older ones tend to be addicted
to online chats with the opposite sex, Tao says. Others are fixated on
designing violent games.
Tao, a psychiatrist for 20 years who specializes in treating addiction,
estimates that up to 2.5 million Chinese suffer from Internet addiction,
though others are skeptical.
