Is this an OK Chinese name?

Strawberries513 -
I am going to China for a study program, and on the visa application form it asks for a Chinese name (if any), and real name. The Chinese name that I use for myself (but have never used for anything serious) is 乐恋飞 (乐 yue4 being the surname and 恋飞 lian4 fei1 being the given name). I dont know if I should put this name in the application, and if it is ok to use it, is it even a good/acceptable Chinese name? (for a girl?)

If anything is wrong with it and someone would like to suggest something else, I am open to ideas. But I also need to know whether I am supposed to actually put this name in my application since its not a legal name.

Thanks !!

Congratulations! On the Visa form, I would keep it simple and just leave it out. Once in China, you can tell people to call you any Chinese name that you like. No need to put it on any government document, which then won’t match up to any other official US document, like your passport. On the name itself, I have no idea, but it sounds pretty. I’ll cast my vote in favor. Good luck, and write home (I mean here) often!

Strawberries513, have you ever considered 草莓 as your Chinese name? It sounds nice, too.

In Putonghua, I think that when 乐 is used as the surname, it should be pronounced as luo4 instead of yue4.

I can confirm that in Putonghua, 乐 can be used as 2 separate surnames Yuè and .

Ian Lee, 乐 as a surname has two pronunciations in standard Mandarin. See this thread, where people seem to say that northerners habitually read it as Yue, while southerners read it as Le (or Lao) - all fourth tone.

Am not at all a native speaker, but your name sounds really beautiful to me. Original yet credible as a Chinese name, and it doesn't seem to mean anything strange.
Good luck in China!

Personally, I like this name 乐恋飞 Yue4 Lian4fei1. A pretty nice Chinese name!

你最好把自己的想法直接告诉对方,我想大多数中国人都会配合你的。

当然,你也别光顾着自己联系中文,也多给别人一些练习英语的机会。

互相帮助!

@roddy

Yes, I have looked into CPod's premium features and they just don't fit my study pattern. New
vocabulary is introduced as individual words whereas I prefer to create my own flash cards with...

Absolutely, and both groups have the right to follow their preferences. I only sometimes wish
there were different names for their activities.

Very true. Yet the title question 'CPod -...

Ok, let's discuss individual learning styles. There is no 'right' way, there are many ways. Some
of them are efficient, others are less efficient. But efficiency has to be measured in...

I have come across this site before. His approach is very hardcore indeed. Most people (even on

Re: Chinesepod.com-Does it really work?

Discussing individual learning styles is rather out of place in this thread. And yet, what
realistic alternatives are there to memorising (bits of) dialogues - in the sense of listening to
them to...

Luobot-san et al.,

With due respect for the validity of many points made so far, I'm amazed by this discussion: is
this a particular feature of people who tend to actively participate in discussion...
